Regenerative Forestry

The Cortes Value-Added Roadmap marks a crucial first step towards maximizing the island’s local wood sector through a sector planning initiative.

Regenerative Forestry

Forestry has long been a pillar of the economy on Vancouver Island and the coast. We focus our investments on ecologically responsible and regenerative forest stewardship that keeps Indigenous and rural communities, and the economies that depend on the forest, healthy and resilient.

We encourage proposals that move the coastal forest sector to maximize local benefits for resource-reliant communities and actively renew the landscapes the sector depends on. Like regenerative and organic farming, regenerative forestry produces what we use while improving the forests, watersheds, and communities it operates within. On this coast, that means investing in value-added and second-growth manufacturing, Indigenous-led stewardship that generates new revenue, and the economic opportunities that come from a healthier, working forest.

Through investments in regenerative stewardship and value-added wood manufacturing, we help build a forest economy that can thrive over the long term: one that renews the landscapes it depends on, supports good jobs in forestry-dependent communities, advances Indigenous stewardship and leadership, and keeps more of the value of the forest in the communities that steward it.

What Projects Do We Fund?

Projects We Fund

  • Establishment and development of community-owned forests
  • Forest farming and non-timber forest product development such as botanicals, essential oils, medicinal herbs, mushrooms, wild berries, and other products with clear commercial or sector development potential
  • Carbon sequestration projects that re-invest revenue into local economies
  • Value-added wood product manufacturing, including start-ups, expansions, equipment, or facilities that increase local processing
  • Indigenous-led stewardship initiatives that create sustainable economic opportunities, including projects connected to Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) where there is a clear economic development component

Projects We Do Not Fund

  • Projects focused on timber extraction without demonstrated restoration, stewardship, or value-added components
  • Value-added manufacturing that relies on fibre from sources that cannot be validated as following sustainable and regenerative practices
  • Projects that primarily export raw resources without increasing local processing, employment, ownership, or community benefit

Start the Conversation

However far along you are – an early idea, a plan taking shape, or a proposal nearly ready – the best next step is a conversation. That is where we like to start, and where the best projects usually begin.

We welcome every chance to work alongside you as your project takes shape. Reach out before you start a funding application, while the plan is still forming. When you share where you’re headed, we can help shape it with you and build a strong application together.

We’re available by phone or online, and we’re glad to meet in person, welcoming the opportunity to meet in your community.
